Skin rejuvenation—also known as laser resurfacing—is an innovative cosmetic treatment that can help reverse skin damage caused by sun exposure, aging, and lifestyle habits like smoking. Dr. Ruidas and her team at Esthetica Maui Laser Clinic and Medspa located in Kahului, Maui, Hawaii, is pleased to provide this safe and effective way to achieve younger looking skin.
The state-of-the-art PicoSure aesthetic system is a fractional, non-ablative laser that works by delivering precision light beams deep into the dermis to stimulate collagen growth and tighten underlying skin. Unlike ablative lasers, which act by “wounding” or removing thin layers of skin, PicoSure laser resurfacing is less invasive and generally requires less recovery time between sessions.
Although laser skin resurfacing won’t get rid of loose or saggy skin, it can correct or improve a variety of other common skin problems, including:
Laser skin resurfacing isn’t right for everyone, however. Dr. Ruidas may recommend you avoid the treatment if any of the following apply:
Because it’s less invasive than ablative laser treatments, there are fewer potential side effects with PicoSure non-ablative laser resurfacing treatments. You may, however, experience mild swelling and redness, which typically lasts no more than a few hours. You may also notice short-term changes in skin tone, as non-ablative lasers can temporarily darken your skin at the treatment site. Although rare, you can experience blistering or mild scarring.
It’s important to avoid too much unprotected sun exposure in the weeks leading up to your first skin rejuvenation procedure, as it can cause permanent pigmentation changes in the treated areas. During the procedure, Dr. Ruidas will provide you with eye shields to protect your corneas and retinas from the laser. She’ll also apply either a water-based gel or cool air to your skin before using the laser. Treatments can last anywhere from 15-90 minutes, depending on the area that’s being treating. Optimal results are usually achieved through a series of treatments scheduled over the course of several weeks.
